Description

Mentioning his longtime ally, “Mr. Jefferson”

ALS signed “Lf,” one page, 5 x 7.25, no date. Letter to an unidentified gentleman. In full: “Enclosed I send you two letters for Mm Crawford and Monroe calculated to be delivered to and by you. A bundle of letters sent by the post to the house will no doubt wait there for you. It is probable that my son who goes to town Tuesday may yet find you. If not he will forward the letter to the providence, and one to Mr. Jefferson if there remains behind you an opportunity to send it.” In very good to fine condition, with paper loss to all four corners, affecting appearance but neither text nor signature, intersecting folds, and a touch of slight toning.

Lafayette and Jefferson were friends and correspondents for nearly fifty years, having met while Jefferson was serving as United States minister to France from 1785 to 1789. To honor his friend, Jefferson had hung a portrait of Lafayette at Monticello, near portraits of Sir Walter Raleigh and James Madison. Jefferson’s admiration for Lafayette was almost palpable in a speech at a dinner honoring the French military genius in Charlottesville, where Jefferson applauded his role in the Revolutionary War and continued, in part: "When I was stationed in his country, for the purpose of cementing friendship with ours and advancing our mutual interests, this friend of both was my most powerful auxiliary and advocate...Honor him, as your benefactor in peace as well as in war." Wonderful association between two Revolutionary pillars. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
