Description

Doyle signs a single-exposure portrait of a ghost

Vintage 2.5 x 4.25 single exposure ‘spirit’ photo, bearing a printed caption at the bottom that reads, “Taken with one Exposure only.” The image, purported to be the ghost of a young girl sitting in the lap of a young man, has been signed at the bottom of the image in-full by Doyle. In fine condition, with a bit of light silvering to image, and a bit of light curling to the edges.

The first example of its kind we have offered, this signed image reflects the author’s growing fascination with spiritualism. After the death of several loved ones—including his his wife Louisa, their son Kingsley, his brother Innes, his two brothers-in-law, and his two nephews—Doyle sank into depression. He found solace in the alleged scientific proof of existence beyond the grave. Curiously, Doyle’s acceptance of "proof" such as this photo (later proven to be a hoax) seems at odds with the logical mind that created the far more skeptical Sherlock Holmes. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
