Description

Scarce signed Song of the South animation cel

Original hand-colored animation cel from Song of the South, showing Brer Fox holding Brer Rabbit tied to a stake while being prepared for dinner, presented against a color background. The cel has been trimmed to the outline of both figures, as was customary when being prepared for presentation, with the overall visible image measuring 9.5 x 7.5. The cel’s original mat has been partially covered by a newer mat, with the pencil caption, “From Song of the South,” light, but legible, as well as the original “Original WDP” ink stamp. Signed under the stamp in black crayon, circa late 1940s-early 1950s. Framed to an overall size of 17 x 16. In fine condition, with aforementioned trimming and newer mat, scattered light crazing to cel, and a small chip to frame corner.

As with most Disney creations, Song of the South (1946) has become an animation classic, in spite of what some call racially insensitive stereotypes. Featuring mostly live-action footage interspersed with animation, critics still hail the controversial film as one of the best of its time, with the song "Zip-A-De-Doo-Dah” winning an Academy Award. Any animation cel or drawing from this feature is quite rare, especially so when signed by Disney. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
