Description

Cohan’s pens the rousing chorus of his patriotic standard, “Over There”

Spectacular AQS on an off-white 8 x 10.75 sheet of vellum, signed at the bottom, “George M. Cohan.” Cohan writes out the chorus of his patriotic standard “Over There”. In full: “Over there, over there, Send the word, send the word over there. That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming. The drum's rum-tumming everywhere. So prepare, say a prayer, Send the word, send the word to beware, We'll be over, we're coming over. And we won't come back till it's over, over there.” Sheet is affixed to an identical size piece of heavy cardstock. In very good condition, with overall wrinkling (heavier along the edges), scattered toning and foxing, and Cohan’s final line and signature a shade light due to reduced ink flow.

Written by Cohan in 1917, the rousing song offered a patriotic fervor to the young men headed off to fight in World War I. A generation later, a new batch of soldiers and sailors were invigorated by the words and the positive message that “we won’t be back till it’s over over there.” Though the United States had gone from being a tolerant nation under the leadership of Woodrow Wilson to one thrust into the brutalities of war, Cohan’s lyrics gave the madness a sense of purpose.
