Description

Last minute military adjustments for the Battle of Arroyo dos Molinos, which would end with 30 French casualties

LS in French, written in the hand of Fain and signed “Np,” one page, 7.25 x 9, October 18, 1811. Letter to the Duke of Feltre. Translated, in full: “I am replying to your letter of October 18, bureau of the artillery—I approve that the 2nd company of the 22nd principal battalion be replaced by the 6th company of the 4th principal battalion and that the 3 companies of the 4th principal, viz, the 6th, 3rd, and 2nd be sent to Metz; that the 2nd company of the 9th-bis be sent to Mainz to be reunited with the three other companies; and finally, that you take steps to have the 2 companies of the 9th-bis and the 3 companies of the 4th principal return from Spain as soon as possible, so as to have these two battalions at full strength for the north.” An accompanying note reads “Received Oct. 21 and sent to Gen. Gassendy.” In fine condition, with small pin holes and surface impressions to lower left.

At the peak of his power, Napoleon was in Amsterdam when he wrote to the Minister of War, General Henri Jacques Guillaume Clarke, in order to reorganize his troops. Ten days later, at the Battle of Arroyo dos Molinos, Spanish forces defeated French troops led by General Jean-Baptiste Girard, resulting in 300 French casualties and 1300 prisoners. An excellent glimpse of Napoleon preparing his troops for battle, highly suitable for display. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
