Description

Chagall anticipates his exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art

TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, March 13 [noted in pencil 1946]. Chagall writes to Alexander Kouse at the Brooklyn Eagle. In part: “I must apologize for not signing the letter I wrote you, it is a most unpardonable omission…I want to thank you again for you[r] very sympathetic article on my exposition, and I hope very much that I shall see you at the retrospective exhibition of my work which will take place on the 9th of April at the Museum of Modern Art.” Light intersecting folds (vertical fold through first name) and a touch of mild toning and wear to top edge, otherwise fine, clean condition.

By 1946, Chagall’s artwork was becoming more widely recognized. The Museum of Modern Art in New York held a large exhibition with 40 years of his paintings on display. Running from April through June, the retrospective gave visitors one of the first complete impressions of the changing nature of his art over the years. One imagines that Kouse found time during that two month period to view Chagall’s work, warranting, perhaps, another glowing review. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
