Description

London references “John Barleycorn” after an apparent inquiry involving alcoholism

Popular American novelist (1876–1916), best known for such adventure classics as The Call of the Wild, The Sea-Wolf, and White Fang, who drew his writings from his experiences as a prospector, hobo, pirate, gentleman farmer, reformer, and war correspondent. Though plagued by addiction to drugs and alcohol, London wrote prolifically and was the highest-paid American writer of his day. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 6.5, stamp-addressed and stamp-dated March 17, 1914. Letter to Sadie Wolf in New York. In full: “Replying to your kind letter of the 12th instant, I would refer you to my John Barleycorn for the personal statement which you desire. I herewith give you my permission so to use same. Under separate cover I am mailing you an autographed copy of a novel of mine entitled Adventure, in which I have pasted my photograph. Trusting you will receive same in good order, and begging forgiveness for extreme brevity—I have just returned from a six month absence.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature.

John Barleycorn is London’s autobiographical memoir, published in 1913, that deals with his battles with alcoholism. In his work, London explored the outward and inward life of an alcoholic, with the passages often delving deep into his state of mind. Many literary experts view this publication to be among his strongest and most evocative writing, while others continue to debate whether the language is a warning against alcohol or a “love hymn” in favor of it! A desirable letter referencing his great book of “alcoholic memoirs.” Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
