Description

A delighted Disney accepts praise for his favorite film, Mary Poppins

TLS, one page, 6 x 9, personal letterhead, September 9, 1964. Letter of thanks to Tom Jackson in Hollywood, California. In full: “Thank you for letting me have the note about your reaction to ‘Mary Poppins.’ I was delighted that you and your family could come and that you enjoyed the films.” Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Phil Sears. Beautifully double suede matted and framed in a Mary Poppins-theme, along with an image of Walt sharing tea with Mary and a small name plaque, to an overall size of 22.5 x 25.5. In fine condition, with some mild toning along vertical edges.

Disney considered Mary Poppins (1964) one of the crowning achievements of his career. Prior to the film’s opening, Disney had not personally attended a studio premiere since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937—but he made an exception for his favorite film. The public and critics were also smitten with the motion picture. Mary Poppins was the only film personally produced by Disney to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and at the time was the most expensive film produced by Disney Studios. In this correspondence, Walt rightfully acts like a proud father of what became the top-grossing film of 1965 and the top-grossing Disney film for 20 years. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
