DS as president, one page, 8 x 10.5, May 25, 1868. Johnson orders the Secretary of State “to affix the Seal of the United States to the envelope of a letter addressed to His Majesty the King of Wurtenburg (Mr George Bancroft’s credence).” Signed at the conclusion by Johnson. In very good condition, with mounting remnants to reverse of corners, several repairs to separations along folds, light toning along folds (passing through the signature), and a small tear to top edge.
The recipient of the referenced letter was Charles I, third King of Wurttemberg from 1864 until his death in 1891. Bancroft, who is also mentioned, was an author and educator appointed by Johnson as minister to Berlin. Looking back, it is commendable that Johnson would be attending to the affairs of state while his political life hung in the balance. The day after signing this document, on May 26, 1868, Johnson became the first US Chief Executive to be acquitted at his impeachment trial.
