Description

Kennedy prepares for one of his first political speeches after taking up residence in his district

Early, rare, and boldly penned ALS, one page, 5.5 x 7, October 26, 1945. Brief letter to Mildred Buchanan Flagg, written from the Hotel Bellevue in Boston. Flagg was a Boston based writer and lecturer, who among other things, organized “Celebrity Breakfasts” from 1945-1949. In full: “Thank you for your letter—I will most certainly be there. Cordially, John F. Kennedy.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, and trimmed edges.

In early 1945, Kennedy had been discharged from the Navy and spent the next few months attending the opening of the United Nations in San Francisco, and also observing the parliamentary elections in Britain working as a journalist for the Hearst newspaper chain. Later on, in July and August, he visited Germany to personally view the devastation caused by World War II.

After returning to America, Kennedy wrote this letter from the Hotel Bellevue in Boston where ‘Honey Fitz’ Fitzgerald lived in retirement. When Kennedy decided to run for Congress, his father rented a two-room suite for him at the hotel so he had an official residence in the Congressional district. It was shortly after this, on November 11, 1945, that he gave his first political speech at the Crosscup Pishon American Legion Post. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
