Description

Cornwallis promotes a military officer during his tenure in India

English general (1738–1805) who fought against Washington during the American Revolution and was finally defeated at Yorktown. The crushing defeat aroused much antiwar sentiment in England, and hostilities thereafter tapered off until the final withdrawal of British troops in 1783. Partly-printed DS, signed “Cornwallis,” one page, 13.75 x 10.5, November 1, 1788. Cornwallis appoints George Prole to the position of Lieutenant in the King’s Army in the East Indies.” Signed at the bottom in black ink by Cornwallis. Two vertical folds, moderate toning and staining, small areas of paper loss along folds, and closing portion of text a bit difficult to read, otherwise very good condition. Despite the flaws, Cornwallis’ signature remains quite strong.

In 1786 Cornwallis was appointed Governor-General and commander in chief in India, where he instituted land reforms and reorganized the British army and administration. In 1792, he defeated the powerful sultan of Mysore by capturing his capital, which concluded the Third Anglo-Mysore War and paved the way towards British dominance in Southern India. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
