Declaration of Independence: George Walton

ALS signed “Geo Walton,” one page both sides, 8.25 x 13, July 31, 1801. Letter to his son. In part: “I think my son, you have some cause of complaint, in my having sent you to[o] far away from me, and not to have written to you for so long…After the Circuit was over, I had to attend at Louisville about our University; and there I was appointed one of a Committee to go away up to Jackson County to chose a place for building it…The overseer soon got well, and has agreed very well with the Negroes commanding them with due authority at the same time.” Second integral page bears an address panel in another hand. Matted and framed so both sides are visible, to an overall size of 24.5 x 21.25. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, light show-through from text on opposite sides, several small areas of in erosion to text, and scattered creases.
