Highly influential British poet, politician, soldier, and adventurer, sexual and otherwise (1788–1824), who takes a place as the most colorful literary figure of the Romantic era. His works include such classics as Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage and Don Juan. Envelope panel, 4.75 x 3, addressed by Byron’s half-sister (and rumored lover) Augusta, to George Lynch, Esq. in Peterfield, and signed in the lower left, “Byron.” Panel is also dated 1814, and bears “Free” stamp to right side. In very good condition, with missing top left corner, a few small edge tears, mild toning, and an additional “Nottingham” stamp above signature.
On February 1, 1814, Byron's The Corsair was published, selling approximately 10,000 copies on its first day. The poem was one of the gloomy works he produced at a time when he was engaged in several ill-fated love affairs. He married in 1815, and the couple had a daughter, August Ada. Ada proved to be a mathematical prodigy and is considered by some to be the first computer programmer, thanks to her work on Charles Babbage's computing machine. However, Byron’s marriage quickly foundered, and the couple legally separated. By that time, however, scandal had broken out over Byron's suspected incest with his half-sister Augusta; he was ostracized from society and forced to flee England in 1816.
