Description

James J. Jeffries awards a “Certificate of Victory” to amateur boxer Shemp Howard of the Three Stooges

Heavyweight boxing champion of the world, 1899–1904. DS, signed “Jas. J. Jeffries,” one page, 8.25 x 11.25, January 16, 1941. Jeffries Barn Certificate of Victory “presented to Shemp Howard…and certifies that he defeated Sam Arnow in an amateur boxing bout by KO—1sr round.” Signed vertically in fountain pen by Jeffries next to his image in the lower right. Matted and framed with a cigarette card to an overall size of 12.25 x 17. Some light spotting around signature and image, thin line of staining along top edge, and a small hole to top right corner, otherwise fine condition.

James J. Jeffries was a world heavyweight boxing champion known to possess one-punch knockout power in his left hook. In his later years, Jeffries trained boxers and worked as a fight promoter, working out of "Jeffries Barn" which was located on his alfalfa ranch in Burbank, California. As fans are aware, Shemp Howard was more than just a Stooge, he was also a sports fanatic…the more aggressive the better. His favorite Three Stooges comedy short was the 1947 release titled Fright Night, which was also his first comedy with the Stooges. The premise involved a boxing match. It’s no surprise then that Shemp would try his hand in the ring, and that he would be a success. Ironically, Howard would later die in the back seat of a car on his way home from watching a boxing match. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
