Description

Looking skyward, Lindbergh asks for an aircraft with high gasoline capacity

Handwritten Western Union telegram, in pencil signed “Lindbergh,” 8 x 6.5, September 20, 1929. To Mr. Work at the Detroit Aircraft company, Lindbergh writes in full: “Would like to have maximum gasoline capacity possible up to six hundred gallons Stop also dump valves for emergency use Stop Will contact with you on return.” Two penciled notes in a clerk’s hand in lighter pencil at left and right of lower portion read: “Given me by Lindbergh JWE. Sept 20-29 and was typed and sent” and “For Jimmy Nuetes from Uncle Jim.” Double matted and framed with a portrait of Lindbergh in front of his plane, to an overall size of 15.5 x 24.5. In fine condition, with a mild overall shade of toning, small chip to top edge, and intersecting folds, one passing through a single letter of signature.

In September 1929, on behalf of Pan American Airways, Lindbergh flew from Miami to San Juan and then on to Dutch Guinea, making 14 stops along the way. He eventually returned to Miami via Venezuela, Colombia, and the Canal Zone. This completed what was to become known as The Lindbergh Circle. Following these flights he was to look further afield and attempted to find a route to Asia, finally settling on a route that is used to this day.

Before embarking on the Lindbergh Circle, however, and already planning such long-range trips, Lindbergh sent this telegram to Detroit Aircraft from Miami. The company eventually constructed the Lockheed 8 Sirius, which the aviation pioneer used on around-the-world survey flights for Pan American Airways in the early 1930s. Oversized. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
