Description

As Acting Secretary of State of the Republic of Texas, Burnet certifies a Chief Justice

Early politician within the Republic of Texas, serving as Interim President (1836 and again in 1841), Vice-President (1839-41), and Secretary of State (1846) for the new state of Texas after it was annexed to the United States of America. Partly-printed DS, one page, 7.75 x 7.5, January 10, 1840. Certification of James C. Allan as Chief Justice of Refugio County. Document reads: “I, the undersigned, actg Secretary of State of the Republic of Texas, do hereby certify that James C. Allan whose name is subscribed to the instrument of writing herein annexed, is, and was at the time of signing the same 27th Decr 1839 Chief Justice and Ex Officio A Notary Public for Refugio County – and that full faith and credit are due to his official acts as such.” Signed at the conclusion by Burnet, who adds, “acting” to the first line of printed text. Two trimmed edges, intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a diagonal crease through first name, and scattered toning, foxing and wrinkling, otherwise very good condition. The Department of State paper seal is worn but intact. Despite the flaws, Burnet’s signature is quite crisp and bold. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
