Description

Lengthy Prince Albert biography, all five volumes of which are lovingly signed by Victoria

Signed set of books: Life of the Prince Consort Volumes I-V. London: Smith, elder, and Company, 1875. Hardcover, 6 x 9. Signed and inscribed on the second free end page of Volume I, “To the Hon. Flora MacDonald from her affectionate, Victoria R, Jan: 1875.” Each of the other four volumes are also individually inscribed to MacDonald, signed more intimitately as “V. R.” and, interestingly, dated at various other times: January 1877, February 1878, July 1879, and August 1880. Accompanied by an ALS, signed “Harriet L. Phipps, dated January 21, 1894, written to the presumably the books author, Theodore Martin. In part: “The Queen desires me to thank you for the letter…which her Majesty received from you this morning. The Queen also wishes me to thank you much for the copies of your touching & beautiful verses on Prince Alexander of Buklgaria, which came some days ago.” Set as a whole rates very good, with loose and/or partially separated hinges, spines soiled, worn, and chipped in places, and scattered foxing to interior pages. .

Upon marrying Victoria in 1840, Prince Albert tackled numerous public causes, including educational reform and the abolition of slavery, and took on the responsibilities of running the Queen's household, estates, and office. The 1861 death of Albert plunged the Queen into a deep mourning which lasted until her passing 40 years later. The Prince of Bulgaria ruled that nation from 1879 to 1886. He died in October 1893 at age 36, six years younger than Albert when he died. Given her undying love for her husband, and the grief she carried with her for the rest of her life, it is no surprise that she would want to lovingly sign and distribute items related to Albert. Five unique survivors from the Victorian Age, each intriguingly signed at various times. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
