Description

Passage for the “Brig William Henry of New York”

Partly-printed vellum DS, signed “James Madison” as president and “Jas. Monroe” as secretary of state, one page, 11 x 15, August 30, 1816. Scalloped-top ship’s pass issued to the “Brig William Henry of New York, Peter Alms master and commander…mounted with no guns, navigated with 11 men.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, with a single vertical fold affecting a single letter of both signatures, scattered mild toning and soiling, a couple trivial pinholes to page, and both signatures a shade or two light, but completely legible. The white paper seal remains crisp and intact, with a uniform shade of light toning.

This impressive document bears the signatures of two consecutive chief executives: Madison, the fourth president of the United States, and his immediate successor, Monroe. The paper's scalloped top edge provides an artful border for, first, a frigate on the open seas and, beneath that, a harbor scene vignette with city, ships, and lighthouse detailed. A desirable presidential pairing. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
