Description

Dickens declines to read another author’s manuscript…but offers a subtle loophole

ALS, one page, 5.25 x 8, Office of All the Year Round letterhead, June 1, 1860. Dickens politely informs Mrs. Henning of his inability to read any sent manuscripts. In part: “I regret to assure you that my ability to be useful to the incredible numbers of my unknown correspondents, halts very far short of my inclinations. I can really do absolutely nothing for your husband’s compositions, beyond myself reading any that you may offer for insertion in these pages…with a sincere desire to make some of them profitable to him, if I can. But I need scarcely tell you that I can only have that satisfaction in the event of their being suitable to the requirements of this journal.” Intersecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, and text appearing a shade or two light due to reduced ink flow, otherwise condition is clean and fine.

Though Dickens, as an author, closes the door on reading the man’s work (squashing a desire to garner creative advice from the esteemed author), it is Dickens, All the Year Round editor and publisher, who takes over with his offer to print a submission, so long as it meets the magazine’s criteria. All the Year Round was a British weekly literary magazine, founded and owned by Dickens, and published between 1859 and 1895. The periodical hosted the serialization of many prominent novels, including Dickens' own Great Expectations, which was published six months after Dickens mailed this reply.
