Description

“You don’t know what it is to be at a loss for words”

Outstanding vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 head-and-shoulders portrait of Harpo in his trademark overcoat, plaid shirt, and top hat, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To J. H. Keen, You don’t know what it is to be at a loss for words. Harpo Marx.” In fine condition, with a couple trivial corner tip creases.

They say that “silence speaks volumes” and that old saying certainly applied to Harpo. With the big, poofy, curly hair, a top hat, and a horn, Arthur Adolph “Harpo” Marx based his alter ego on clown and pantomime performances of days gone by. Many film buffs argue that the lovable mute was in fact the funniest of the Marx Brothers without ever saying a word. Harpo officially became a mime after a theater critic supposedly noted that he was brilliant…until his character spoke. Harpo never uttered another sound.

This is the finest Harpo Marx signed piece we have ever seen, a choice combination of excellent pose and witty inscription, wryly referencing his public persona. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
