Description

Democrat Kennedy inscribes his Pulitzer Prize-winner for a Massachusetts Republican

Signed book: Profiles in Courage. First edition, later printing. NY: Harper and Brothers, 1956. Hardcover with dustjacket, 6 x 8.5, 266 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page, “To Alfred Gaunt, with my good wishes, John Kennedy.” Accompanied by a 1956 New York Times book review of Profiles. In fine condition, with a mild slightly irregular shade of toning to signed page and pastedowns, and one tiny chip to the spine. Dustjacket rates very good, with scattered toning, rubbing, and soiling, and small edge tears and creases.

Alfred Calvin Gaunt was a Worcester, Massachusetts politician, a member of the Massachusetts Governor’s Council from 1947-1948, and in 1955 was named head of the Methuen, Massachusetts Historical Commission. It was during his tenure in this post that Kennedy would have signed this book, as Gaunt died three years after being named. Ironically, Gaunt was also a member of the Republican Party…making the “good wishes” of a Democratic icon like JFK a truly unique, and unexpected, sentiment! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
