Description

Early in her career Marilyn pays for psychoanalysis

Bank check, 5.75 x 2.5, filled out and signed by Monroe, payable to Dr. A. Gottesman for $150, November 9, 1951. Matted with a color ‘Golden Dreams’ nude photo of Monroe, to an overall size of 12 x 18. Year light but legible due to reduced ink flow (Monroe then switched to a better blue pen), light show-through from stamps on reverse, fold passing through the first letter of her surname, and cancellation holes lightly affecting first letter of signature, otherwise fine condition.

Monroe was a star quickly on the rise with a few movie roles already under her belt by 1951, and in May was a presenter at the Academy Awards. The best (and worst) was yet to come for Marilyn the actress, but 1951 turned out to be a fairly good one for Marilyn the model. After all, who wouldn’t be proud to collect such honors as “The Girl Most Likely to Thaw Alaska” awarded by soldiers in the Aleutians, “The Girl Most Wanted to Examine” by the 7th Division Medical Corps, and “The Girl They Would Most Like to Intercept” by the All Weather Fighter Squadron Three of San Diego.

Despite adoration by millions of fans, Monroe had a lifetime of trouble reconciling feelings of inadequacy and abandonment, a situation aggravated by a need for prescription medication to alleviate anxiety, all of which led to an eventual substance abuse problem. Despite help early in her career from psychoanalyst Abraham Gottesman (to whom Monroe sent this check) the problem worsened and her misery, many contend, led to her death. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
