Description

A pristine request to pay “officers & servants of and belonging to His Majesties Royal Hospital”

Distinguished and influential British architect (1632–1723) who played a leading role in the rebuilding of London following the devastating Great Fire of 1666, and whose St. Paul’s Cathedral takes a place among the greatest designs in the history of architecture. Scarce manuscript DS, signed “Chr. Wren,” one page, 9.5 x 7, October 10, 1700. A page from an account book kept by Ralph Cooke, Under-Treasurer of the Royal Hospital at Chelsea, which was designed by Wren and completed in 1692. The document reads, in part: “Whereas there is due to the several respective officers & servants of and belonging to His Majesties Royal Hospital…one half your salary from the First of April 1700 to the last of September 1700 both inclusive amounting to the sum of Nyne hundred nynety four pounds three shillings & four pence…We hereby Direct you to pay the said Sum.” Accompanied by a partial ledger page recording several payments by Cook. In remarkably clean, fine condition, with just a hint of light edge creasing. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
