Partly-printed DS, signed “Theodore Roosevelt” as president and “Wm. H. Taft” as secretary of war, one page, 15.75 x 20.75, December 26, 1905. Roosevelt appoints Benjamin Alvord a “Military Secretary with the rank of Major.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Roosevelt, and countersigned by Taft. Some light wrinkling and rippling, crease to lower left corner tip, and a few spots of trivial toning, otherwise fine condition. The blue seal remains crisp and intact.
Benjamin Alvord, Jr. (1860-1927) was born in Washington, D.C. He was an instructor at West Point from 1887-1891 and at the Infantry and Cavalry School in 1894. During the Philippine Insurrection, he served as a regimental adjutant and also as an Adjutant General of a division in the field. He accompanied General John J. Pershing to France during World War I and received the Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious service during the war.
