Description

Gorky smooths travel of Italian friends to “beautiful and dear” Mother Russia

Russian/Soviet author and political activist (1868-1936); founder of socialist realism literary movement. LS in French, signed in Russian “M. Gorky,” one page, 4.25 x 7, no date. Letter addressed “Cher ami,” an introduction for journalist Ugo Ojetti and his wife. In full: “I am introducing you to Mr. and Mrs. Ugo Ojetti – our Italian friends who are going on a trip to Russia and Finland. I am convinced that as soon as you meet them they will become your friends, because they are charming, good minded, refined and sought after. I would like that you introduce them to all that is the best in your beautiful and dear country, and I am sure in advance that you will do it with your habitual kindness and grace. Fondest regards to you, your wife and children from us.” In fine condition, with a bit of light feathering to signature and a tiny split along the central fold.

Gorky lived in Italy for two periods during the early twentieth century, and by all accounts, loved all things Italian, especially the people. His friend Ugo Ojetti (1871- 1946) was a prominent Italian art critic and journalist. Ojetti included an affectionate chapter about Gorky in his book As They Seemed to Me, published in 1928. His fondness for his friend is obviously reciprocated in this intimate letter of introduction to one of Gorky’s Russian countrymen. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
