I wotes for dinner at Greenwich. Ever Yours most faithfully.” Under his signature, Dickens adds, “In convulsions of Dombey.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and some scattered mild edge toning, with a slightly heavier spot to lower right corner tip.
Dickens informs his friend Lord Robertson, a judge and popular wit, that his wife Catherine is “heartily well” after the birth of their seventh child, a son called Sydney. However, a difficult delivery, their son Charles’ illness, the death of his publisher, and the pressure of moving to a newly rented house weighed heavily upon the author. “In convulsions of Dombey” makes wry reference to his difficulties in completing installments of his current serial, entitled Dombey and Son, amidst the turmoil.
