Description

Liszt’s lovely signed passage with an intriguing provenance

Hungarian Romantic era composer and pianist (1811–1886) whose prowess at the keyboard earned him a cachet as perhaps the greatest virtuoso in the history of the instrument. Fabulous AMQS on an off-white 6 x 3.5 sheet, two measures for piano headed “Preludio,” signed “F. Liszt” and dated at “Riga,” 1842. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling and a few tiny spots, light bends and creasing to edges, and a central vertical fold. The writing is dark and bold.

The reverse bears a note in another hand, evidently related to the item’s origin and reads, “Perhaps Aunt Paula will be able to solve this riddle of ours? This leaf is by the great master Fr. Liszt, who was in Riga in 1842 and who probably handed it to Papa in the salon.” On March 14, 1842, Liszt had been awarded the honorary doctorate of Königsberg University; he then proceeded to Dresden via St. Petersburg. Luckily for the family who originally owned this charming keepsake, he apparently stopped in Riga, a large Baltic city. The “great master” chose an uncommonly complex musical passage to dash off for his admirer. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
