Description

At height of his creative powers, Mondrian prepares an exhibition

Dutch painter (1912–1944), closely associated with the De Stijl movement, best known for his primary-colored geometric “Compositions.” ALS in French, one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.5, January 1, 1932. Letter to his friend, architect Alfred Roth about an upcoming exhibition called “Société 1940.” In part (translated): “Mid-January I present here some pictures at “Societe 1940”. The other association, “Abstraction - Creation” which I have mentioned has no means to hold an exhibition, but it will be an almanac.” In fine condition, with show-through from text on opposing sides.

At the end of WWI, Mondrian returned to France, where he had moved from his native Holland in 1912. He flourished in the artistic innovation that characterized post-war Paris, which allowed him to develop his signature grid-based style utilizing primary colors. As the years progressed, lines began to take precedence over forms in his painting. In the 1930s, he began to use thinner lines and double lines more frequently. Since the exhibition he was preparing in 1932 was entitled “Société 1940” we can conclude that it was a forward-looking event. The rather lengthy text of this letter offers a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of Paris in the 1930s through the eyes of an artistic genius.
