American modernist writer and critic (1885–1972) whose works, particularly his poetry, occupy a central place in twentieth-century letters. Short TLS signed “E. Pound,” one page, 5.5 x 3.5, no date, but postmarked March 26, 1932. Postcard to Frank Ankenbrand in Philadelphia. In full: “Thanks very much. Will write my alleged agent re/ the piracy of the Gourmont. Curiously enough I have just for the first time in my life Mentioned Macy, as the lowest type of murkn mugger.” In fine condition, with some scattered light toning and handling wear, and light show-through from postmarks on address side.
The late Remy de Gourmont was a prominent figure of the French symbolist movement. His views on the importance of visual perception in literature had a profound influence on Pound from at least 1912, when he first mentions de Gourmant in correspondence with his mother. On the other hand, the term Pound applies to the unknown “Macy” is unflattering and salacious in British slang. A casual note to a family friend from a brilliant leader of the Modernist movement.
