Color 10 x 8 NASA photo of the Apollo 11 prime crew in their flight suits, signed in blue felt tip by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and in black felt tip by Michael Collins; and a TLS, signed “Neil Armstrong,” on NASA letterhead, stamp dated September 18, 1969. Armstrong writes to an Oregon police officer, acknowledging the signed photo. In part: “Unfortunately, our flight patch is made especially for authorized personnel and it is not available for distribution to the public. However, I am enclosing an autographed crew picture which I hope will suit your purpose.” Photo is in fine condition, with Collins’ signature several shades light, but legible, a few light creases to background, and a bit of creasing to top left border; letter has a diagonal crease to blank portion of letter, a few chips to bottom edge, and a mild overall shade of toning, just a bit heavier to right vertical edge, otherwise fine condition.
On July 21, 1969, less than two months before the date of this letter, Armstrong had stepped foot on the lunar surface and ensured his place in history. The crew returned home on July 24 and were quarantined until August 13. Two days before this letter, the crew spoke before joint meeting of Congress, presenting two flags that had been carried to the moon. Still, as busy as he was, Armstrong, riding the euphoric wave of national acclaim, still took the time to answer well-wishers. As good a provenance as you will find!
