American composer and pianist (1898–1937) who was one of the first musicians to attain success in both popular and “serious” spheres. Vintage page from book or pamphlet, 6 x 9, featuring several printed bars of Gershwin’s Concerto in F, signed in pencil, “George Gershwin,” above one of the bars of music. Light overall toning, a bit heavier to edges from prior framing, and a couple of small edge chips and tears, otherwise fine condition.
Conductor and director Walter Damrosch commissioned the Concerto in F the day after attending the premiere of Gershwin’s famed “Rhapsody in Blue.” This composition is considered to be closer in form to a classic concerto than the earlier work. Damrosch is quoted on this page as saying, in part, that Gershwin lifted the level of jazz “by dressing this extremely independent and up-to-date young lady in the classic garb of a concerto.” A strong signature graces this instructive musical page.
