Description

Signed just ten days after narrowly escaping impeachment

Scarce 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite seated portrait of Johnson, signed as president in the lower border in black ink, “Andrew Johnson,” and also signed again on the reverse, with a notation in another hand written above signature, “Presented June 4th 1868.” In fine condition, with bottom edge of image slightly peeling up, light silvering to the darker areas of the image, and a bit of scattered light soiling to reverse.

On March 5, 1868, a court of impeachment began in the Senate to hear charges against Johnson, accused of violating the Tenure of Office Act by attempting to remove Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and replace him with Adjutant-General Lorenzo Thomas. The trial lasted almost three months. On May 26 the final voting took place, after which the trial adjourned. Johnson was acquitted on a 35-19 vote, one less than the majority required. A single changed vote for guilty would have convicted and removed the president from office. Signed photos of Johnson are seldom encountered; this one, dated ten days after his historic reprieve and signed twice, must have found the president in an elated and relieved mood! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
