Description

As darkness of Alzheimer’s descends , a still-upbeat Reagan celebrates his Irish roots

Interesting TLS, one page, 7 x 10.5, sheet of personal letterhead with embossed presidential eagle, March 5, 1994. Letter to the attendants of an Irish fair, in full: “Nancy and I are more than pleased to send our warmest greetings to each of you gathered for the 5th Annual Irish Faire. It is our hope that your day is filled with good friends, family, and much fun! As you all know, I have a ‘wee bit’ of Irish in me and I am proud to join with you in the spirit of the day. This is the time of year when we are able to be ‘Irish for a day’ and I hope that through the laughter, the dancing and the songs of celebration, you will grow in your appreciation and love of the Irish people and their heritage. I know that this annual faire is also a refection of the pride that each of you feels for your community. The funds being raised on these two days will provide so much for those who are less fortunate. Your generous spirit of giving is one which reflects the true meaning of communities and makes American what it is today. Thank you and keep up the good work! Nancy joins me in sending our best wishes for every future joy and happiness. May God bless and keep you.” In fine condition, with a few light creases.

Some reports suggest that former President Ronald Reagan only felt free to acknowledge his Irish heritage after he won the Presidency. Before then, trying to appeal to conservative Republicans, he thought it better to claim English roots.

By the time he wrote this letter to a group raising funds for an unspecified cause with their annual “Irish Faire”, he had long embraced his own “wee bit” of Irish. This letter is especially poignant as it is dated a few months before Reagan disclosed his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
