Description

Unique amendments distinguish Arthur military appointment

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 15.5 x 19.5, May 19, 1883. Arthur appoints J. Marshall Robinson “a Lieutenant in the Navy (Junior Grade).” Signed at the conclusion by Arthur, and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy W. E. Chandler. Printing along left edge reads, “Title changed from Master to Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in accordance with the Act of Congress, 3d March, 1883.” In fine condition, with Arthur’s signature just a shade light, intersecting storage folds, light creases, and a mild shade of toning from previous display. The blue seal is slightly worn, but intact.

John Marshall Robinson began his Navy career as a midshipman in 1869, and went on to be commissioned as Lieutenant Commander on March 3, 1899. Robinson’s elevation from Master to Lieutenant, Junior Grade seems to be simply added to his previous commission in this unique document. In addition to the writing along the side, part of the text is blackened out, and there is an erasure within the text. We have never before seen this type of amendment to a presidential military appointment before. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
