Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 16 x 20, January 3, 1879. President Hayes appoints Nat. P. Phister and “Additional Second Lieutenant in the First Regiment of the Infantry.” Signed at the conclusion by Hayes, and countersigned by Secretary of War George McCrary. Phister would go on to take part in the “Gussie” Expedition in Cuba, and also see action at El Caney and Santiago. In very good condition, with intersecting storage folds, one bisecting Hayes’s signature, and scattered toning. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
