Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland (1737–1832) who was the last survivor among his colleagues. Manuscript DS, signed “Ch. Carroll of Carrollton,” one page both sides, 6.5 x 8.5, April 15, 1791. In part: “I, Charles Carroll of Carrollton of the City of Annapolis am held and firmly bound unto Abraham Lane of Baltimore County in the full and just sum of seventy two pounds, fifteen shillings to be paid to said Lane or to his Attorney or assigns” regarding the purchase of ninety-seven acres of land in Rochester. Intersecting folds, one lightly affecting signature, and mild toning, with a few heavier spots to text and integral second page, otherwise fine condition.
Charles Carroll of Carrollton achieved several “firsts” among the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was the longest lived, last surviving, and only Catholic signer. He enjoyed remarkable success as a planter and businessman as well as in politics; at the time of his death in 1832 he was considered the wealthiest man in America.
Carroll owned much of the land that eventually became the cities and towns of Maryland. This document, describing in great detail an agreement between him and Abraham Lane, provides an excellent example of Carroll’s extremely profitable business dealings.
