Very rare signature of ‘El Cuchara,’ who attempted to break baseball’s color barrier in 1912

American baseball player (1884-1964) in the Negro Leagues who attempted to break the major league color barrier in 1912, 35 years before Jackie Robinson was successful in that endeavor. A line-drive hitter whose extraordinary skills at shortstop drew favorable comparisons to Honus Wagner, Lloyd was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977. Very scarce ballpoint signature, “John H. Lloyd,” on an off-white 5 x 4.75 sheet affixed to an irregularly shaped 9 x 6 sheet along with a newspaper clipping of Lloyd’s obituary, detailing his attempt to break the major league color ban in 1912. In very good condition, affixed as mentioned above, with show-through from adhesive on reverse (largely affecting the first letter of the signature), light rippling, creasing, and staining from adhesive, and a central horizontal fold (away from signature). The flaws could be largely matted out if desired. An incredible item from the history of baseball! Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
