Signed and inscribed on the first free end page, “Dear friend Horton, Whatever you do, whenever you get to California one thing you must do; namely come and see me on the ‘ranch’ and share grub and blankets. Our latch string is always out to the good fellows of the world of whom you are one. Jack London, Glen Ellen, California, Sept. 3, 1913.” In very good condition, with inside of front cover loose and cracking, but attached to spine, moderate chipping to right edge of signed page, wear to spine, and rubbing to covers (heavy along spine). There is a small original candid photo of London affixed to the inside front cover, and all writing is large and bold.
The land where London was planning on building his ranch was originally occupied by a winery called Kohler and Frohling. While London was there, he expanded the small cottage to 3,000 square feet and converted the stone house next to it into a study where he would write his works. In 1910, he began work on a mansion on his ranch called the Wolf House. On August 22, 1913, while the Londons were away from their ranch, they got word that their new mansion was on fire. By the time they got there, the house was completely overtaken by the fire and it was too late to save it. Jack London was devastated after the fire burnt down the house that he never got to live in. This put London in debt and forced him to literally work to death. Inside front cover bears an affixed small photo of London. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
