Partial ALS signed “Go. Washington,” one page both sides, 6.25 x 3.25, no date, but November 4, 1797. Partial letter written to Dr. James Anderson, consisting of 11 lines on one side, and five more lines and his closing on the reverse. Washington writes, in part: “This sort is freer from cares…Freed as I am now from the…cares and responsibilities of public occ[asi]ons; and engaged in rural and agric[ult]ural pursuits; I hope; aided by the refle[ction] of having contributed my best endeav[or] to promote the happiness & welfare o[f the] country which gave me and my anc[cestors]. I pray you to accept my thank[s] for the addition to the first two volumes of your Essays on Agricultural subjects; and to be perfectly assured of the high esteem.” James Anderson was a figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, an agriculturist, inventor of the Scotch Plough, and economist. In 1791 he started a weekly publication called The Bee, which was largely written by himself, and of which 18 volumes were published. He was also the author of many pamphlets on agricultural and economical topics, under numerous aliases. Anderson also corresponded with George Washington. Letter has been professionally inlaid to a 9 x 7 sheet. Accompanied by a photocopied letter from 1984 from Walter Benjamin Autographs Inc., acknowledging the sale of the letter. In fine condition, with moderate show-through from text on both sides, trimmed edges, resulting in loss of partial text, and light mailing folds.
