Description

Eisenhower sends thanks to the Kansas City Star editor for “sending me a copy of one of your editorials on the ‘extremist’ organizations”

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.25, personal letterhead, January 3, 1962. Letter of thanks to Richard Fowler, editor of the Kansas City Star. In full: “Thank you very much for your kindness in sending me a copy of one of your editorials on the ‘extremist’ organizations. The response to the editorial is interesting—and encouraging.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and a letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA. In fine condition, with small tear, tack hole, and crease to top edge. Undoubtedly one of the extremist organizations referred to in this letter was the John Birch Society, an Anti-Semitic, racist group founded by Robert W. Welch Jr. and which, by March 1961, had 60,000-100,000 members. Welch famously circulated a letter accusing Eisenhower of being a possible "conscious, dedicated agent of the Communist Conspiracy.” The sensationalism of the charge led many conservatives and mainstream Republicans, most prominently Goldwater and intellectuals of Buckley's circle, to renounce outright or quietly shy away from the group. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
