During a training exercise in the Apollo 1 command module on January 27, 1967, a flash fire, later determined to be caused by exposed wiring in the highly pressurized, oxygen-saturated environment, engulfed the capsule. Within minutes, all three crew members, unable to escape from the tightly sealed capsule, had perished in the most deadly American space-related accident until the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger nearly two decades later. Group of three items, each respectively signed by a member of the ill-fated Apollo 01 crew. Items are: a personal check from Gus Grissom, 6.5 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Grissom, “Virgil I. Grissom,” payable to the NASA Employment Benefit Association for $13.00, dated April 13, 1960; ; a commemorative cover bearing a stamped cachet honoring the Apollo mission naval recovery force, signed along the bottom of the cachet “Roger B. Chaffee”; and a large ballpoint signature, “Best regards, Edward H. White II,” on an off-white card. All three are archivally double matted and framed together with a color NASA crew photo, a reproduction mission patch, and a biographical caption, to an overall size of 18 x 37. In fine condition, with cancellation holes to check, not affecting the clean signature area. A nicely presented grouping honoring those who perished in the first American space tragedy. Oversized. Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
