Description

Adams sends thanks to a young lady who presented him a handmade gift: “Your gift shall be as perpetual an appendage to my person as the Red Ribband of the Bath was to that of Sir William Draper”

ALS signed “J. Q. Adams,” one page, 8 x 10, October 23, 1832. Letter to Mary E. Roberdeau, most likely the daughter of Daniel Roberdeau, who represented Pennsylvania from 1777 to 1779 in the Continental Congress, sending thanks for a sent gift. In part: “Your very kind note of the 6th inst., accompanied by your very acceptable present of an elegant and useful purse, the work of your own hands, has reached me safely. Accept for them my cordial thanks and be assured that your gift shall be as perpetual an appendage to my person as the Red Ribband of the Bath was to that of Sir William Draper. The linen bag, faithful as it was to keep my portable metallic treasures, is discarded, and if the unfortunate sailor’s mark of Moll Thompson, should take the place of current coin in my purse, so long as the purse itself shall enclose, I shall have that in my pocket, which is better than money. A token of your friendly regard.” Previous intersecting mailing folds, small separation along one fold, and light wrinkling and creasing from mounting remnants on reverse, otherwise fine, clean condition. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
