Description

The Mercury astronauts and their wives sign commemorative stamp sheets

Seven blocks of four-cent Mercury 7 postage stamps, each 7.25 x 4, each one signed in the white border in various ink by a Mercury 7 astronaut and his respective wife: Scott and Rene Carpenter, Wally and Jo Schirra, Deke and Marge Slayton, John and Annie Glenn, with John adding an inscription to Ralph O. Johnson, and Gus and Betty Grissom. One block bears an autopen signature of Gordon Cooper, and an authentic signature of his wife Trudy; and another block bears a secretarial Alan Shepard signature, and an authentic signature of his wife Louise. Blocks are impressively museum-quality archivally double matted and framed with two original consecutively dated Life magazine covers, the first from September 14, 1959, of the astronauts in their ‘diamond’ pose, the second from September 21, 1959, of the astronaut’s wives in a corresponding pose; as well as six Mercury mission patches and the large NASA vector “meatball” patch, to an overall size of 40.5 x 35. Accompanied by the full issues of both magazines, as well as a brief ALS from Betty Grissom, stating “I would be most happy to autograph your stamps.” In fine, clean condition. A most dramatic and impressive display of America’s space pioneers, certainly worth of a “stamp” of approval from the avid space collector. Oversized. Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
