Description

“Pictures ... of the members of the Secret Service division during the war”

Son of the founder of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency (1846–1923) who himself headed the company following his father’s death. TLS signed “Wm. A. Pinkerton,” one page, 5.75 x 9, personal letterhead, April 29, 1897. Pinkerton writes to Alfred Hayman in New York City. In part: “Sam Meyers was just in the office and I was showing him some old pictures which we have had copies made of the members of the Secret Service division during the war, and he suggested that he thought Mr. Gillette would like to have a copy of these pictures. I send you therefore to-day by express two photographs raised from old pictures made during the war. You will find your humble servant in both of them. If you see fit will you kindly give them to Mr. Gillette with my compliments, telling him how much I admired him and his piece. It comes nearer being some facts which I personally know about happening during the war than anything I have ever seen….” The actor William Gillette (1853–1937) wrote and performed the lead in the 1896 Civil War drama Secret Service, which became one of his best-known roles. In very good condition, with uneven toning, a few stains and small tears, and mild handling wear. R&R COA.
