Military officer who commanded a company against forces led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse during the Great Sioux War, including the command of General Nelson A. Miles’s artillery at the Battle of Wolf Mountains. Pope eventually attained the rank of brigadier general and left lucid and historically important accounts of the Sioux War. Albumen photo of a young Pope as a cadet at West Point (Class of 1868), 4.75 x 6 mounted to a heavy 9.75 x 13 page, signed in ink on the mount “James W. Pope, Ky.” The reverse bears a similar signed image of John B. Rodman of Illinois. A touch of mild rippling, toning, and soiling to mount, no faults affecting the signature, otherwise fine condition.
