Military officer (1834–1869) decorated for meritorious conduct at the Battle of Five Forks. After the war, he was one of the first officers in the newly formed 7th Cavalry, serving as a captain from July 1866 until his death. A veteran of the Washita Campaign, West is probably best known for bringing charges against Custer that led to his court martial and suspension following Hancock’s War in 1867. War-dated, partly printed DS, signed “Robt. M. West, Major Penna. Artillery,” one page, 25.5 x 16.5, November 16, 1861. A “Consolidated Morning Report” of the Battalions of the 1st Regiment of the Pennsylvania Light Artillery Regiment, then stationed at “Camp near Washington.” Intersecting folds ( a few tiny holes at intersections) and mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition.
