Smith wrote out and signed arguably the most famous orders in Western history and the history of the Indian Wars - Terry’s last orders to Custer, dated June 22, 1876. Ink endorsement, “E. W. Smith,” as Captain of the 18th Infantry and assistant to the Adjutant General, on the docket panel of a 6.5 x 8 document from the Headquarters, Department of the Dakota document, dated January 18, 1877. Document concerns Lieutenant Garlington of the 7th Cavalry and “two horses he turned in” at the Standing Rock Agency, where Sitting Bull, Gall, and Rain in the Face, would ultimately be confined. Garlington was promoted to first Lieutenant effective June 25, 1876, as a result of Little Bighorn.
