Description

Scarce letter from one of Grant’s most trusted associates

Highly regarded military officer (1807–1862) who served in the Mexican and Civil Wars; during the latter, he injured his leg while jumping into a rowboat, leading to an infection that claimed his life. An instructor of Grant’s at West Point, Smith’s skills as a leader were such that Sherman commented, “Had C. F. Smith lived, Grant would have disappeared to history after Donelson.” The construction of the fort named after Smith on the Bighorn River drew the Cheyenne into Red Cloud’s War in 1866. Scarce ALS, signed “C. F. Smith,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, July 29, 1835. Smith writes from West Point to Rev. Philip Lindsley in Nashville. In part: “You letter … to Lieut. Col. DeRussy, requesting an extension of the leave of absence heretofore granted to your son, has been received. In answer thereto I am directed to say that under the circumstances Cadet Lindsley is authorized to remain absent until the 28th…. Will you please to communicate this to your son….” The adjacent leaf bears the address panel in Smith’s hand. Intersecting mailing folds (touching signature), light wrinkling and handling wear, and a few faint stains, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
