American military officer (1834–1889) who served under Custer at Little Bighorn. His questionable leadership during the battle, which he survived, led to accusations of cowardice, incompetence, and drunkenness, and dogged him for the remainder of his military career. Scarce handwritten war-dated endorsement, signed “M. A. Reno, Col. Comdg., 12th Pa. Cavy.,” on a faintly lined 3.25 x 2.5 slip. In full: “Charlestown, Va., Feb 25/65: Fwd.—approved & recommended.” Matted and framed with a photo and two engraved plaques to an overall size of 19.5 x 15.25. A touch of mild soiling, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
