Leader of Sheridan's “fifty first class hardy frontiersmen,” a troop of scouts and frontiersmen raised to fight the Cheyenne in 1868, who were besieged by Tall Bull's Dog Soldiers on what became known as “Beecher's Island.” Among the most famous “Indian fights” in history, the much celebrated and exaggerated Battle of Beecher Island ensured Forsyth’s legend. In 1874, Forsyth was second in command of Custer's Black Hills Expedition with the 7th Cavalry, and it was he who carved Custer's name atop Inyan Kara Mountain, one of the Lakota's most sacred sites. Fine ink signature, “Geo. A. Forsyth, Lt. Col. 4th Cav,” on an off-white slip, clipped from an account document, dated 1878. Matted with a fine portrait of Forsyth as a Brevet Brig. General, to an overall size of 15.5 x 20.75. In fine condition. R&R COA.
